EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Frederick John Napier Broome, 1st Marquess of Willingdon, who served as the Viceroy of India from 1931 to 1936. Born on April 16, 1866, in London, Willingdon joined the Indian Civil Service in 1887 and rose through the ranks, serving in various capacities in India for over three decades. He was appointed as the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1914, where he gained a reputation for his effective administration and popular appeal. In this image, taken in 1932 during his tenure as Viceroy, Lord Willingdon is depicted in formal attire, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Star of India and the Order of the Indian Empire. He is seated against a plain backdrop, with a regal air and an unwavering gaze. A well-behaved dog lies at his feet, adding a touch of warmth and familiarity to the otherwise formal portrait. Lord Willingdon's time as Viceroy was marked by significant developments in India, including the introduction of the Government of India Act of 1935, which paved the way for greater Indian self-rule. He was also known for his efforts to improve the living conditions of the Indian population and to foster better relations between the British and Indian communities. This portrait is a testament to Lord Willingdon's impressive career and his enduring legacy as a respected and effective administrator in India during a pivotal period in its history.
