This 19th century engraving depicts a pivotal moment in French political history, specifically the events of July 1830. The image captures the intense pursuit of Jules Auguste Armand Marie, Prince of Polignac's carriage by an enraged crowd. Polignac, born in Versailles in 1780, was a French politician who, in an attempt to quell the growing liberal opposition, enacted a series of ordinances in July 1830. These ordinances, which were seen as repressive and authoritarian, only served to further inflame the public. In this scene, the prince's carriage is surrounded by a sea of people, their faces contorted with anger and determination. Some hurl stones at the carriage, while others brandish sticks and fists. A dog barks in the background, adding to the chaotic atmosphere. The prince himself is shown clinging to the side of the carriage, his face a mask of fear and desperation. The coachman, sensing the danger, whips the horses into a frenzy, attempting to make a hasty escape. This engraving is a powerful reminder of the volatile political climate of 19th century France and the consequences of political repression. It also serves as a visual representation of the people's desire for change and their willingness to take action to bring about that change, even if it meant putting their own lives at risk.
