EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, an auctioneer holds David Livingstone's historic Hollis and Son shotgun as it goes under the hammer at an auction room in Staffordshire during the 1980s. This gun, a symbol of exploration and adventure, was once carried by the famed Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, as he traversed the African continent in the late 19th century. Livingstone acquired this gun from Hollis and Son, a well-known gunsmith in Birmingham, England, before embarking on his African expedition in 1852. During his journey, the gun was in need of repair, and it was mended by local craftsmen in Africa. This gun, along with Livingstone's other personal effects, was returned to the UK in 1873, following his tragic death in 1873. The faithful bearers Chuma and Susi, who accompanied Livingstone on his final journey, brought the gun back to England with his body. The gun's provenance is further evidenced by the inscription on the barrel, which reads "D. Livingstone, Africa 1856." This photograph, taken in the late 1980s, captures a moment in time when history comes to life, as the gun, with its rich past, is passed from one owner to another. The Hollis and Son shotgun is a testament to Livingstone's incredible journey and the enduring allure of exploration and adventure.
