This powerful and poignant image captures the tragic figure of Osceola, the legendary Seminole leader who led his people in resistance against forced emigration from their ancestral lands in Florida during the 1830s. Osceola, whose real name was Hiawatha Wiracocha, was a charismatic and skilled warrior who had successfully defied previous attempts by the US government to remove the Seminoles. However, in 1837, he was tricked into meeting with federal officials under the false promise of peace negotiations.
