EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, His Royal Highness Frederick William of Prussia (1831-1888), later known as Emperor Frederick III of Germany and Kaiser Fritz of Prussia, is depicted receiving the prestigious Order of the Garter from Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in the hallowed Chapter Room at Windsor Castle. The investiture took place in 1858, following Frederick's marriage to Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Royal Victoria (Vicky) (1840-1901). The scene is filled with an air of regal grandeur, as the newly-minted Prince Consort of Prussia dons his Prussian uniform, adorned with the insignia of his new knighthood. Queen Victoria, resplendent in her royal robes, bestows the Order of the Garter upon her son-in-law, symbolizing his high rank and esteemed position in the British royal family. The Chapter Room at Windsor Castle, with its ornate interiors and rich history, serves as the perfect backdrop for this momentous occasion. The Order of the Garter, one of the most ancient and most prestigious orders of chivalry in the United Kingdom, was founded by Edward III in 1348 and is limited to 26 members, including the Sovereign and the Prince of Wales. Frederick William's investiture into the Order of the Garter marked a significant milestone in his life and cemented his relationship with the British royal family. This photograph is a testament to the close ties between the British and Prussian monarchies during the 19th century and offers a glimpse into the opulent world of royal ceremonies and traditions.
