EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, two native mountain tribal folk, one from the Campa del Alto Perene, also known as the Parenisati or Asheninca, and the other from the Amuesha, or Yanesha people, are depicted in their full traditional costumes in the Perene District of the province Chanchamayo in Peru. Dating back to the 1910s, this image captures the rich cultural heritage of these indigenous communities, who have long occupied the region in the high central jungle of Peru. The Campa del Alto Perene people, represented by the man in the photograph, traditionally inhabited the areas along the upper Perene and Alto Perene rivers, in the present-day departments of Junin and Pasco. Their name, "Campa," means "people" in their native language, and they were known for their agricultural skills, particularly in the cultivation of maize, potatoes, and other crops. The Amuesha people, represented by the woman in the photograph, historically resided in the valleys of the upper Perene and Pozuzo rivers, as well as the headwaters of the Palcazu River and the southernmost headwaters of the Pichis River. The Amuesha name, which means "people of the waters," reflects their deep connection to the natural environment and their reliance on the rivers for their livelihoods. Both the Campa del Alto Perene and Amuesha peoples have a rich cultural tradition, with unique customs, languages, and artistic expressions. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into their way of life, providing a valuable record of their history and heritage. Today, these communities continue to preserve their traditions, maintaining their distinct identities and contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of Peru and South America.
