EDITORS COMMENTS
A Scene of Mangrove Bark Harvesting on Menai Island, Cosmoledo Group, Seychelles (October 1907) This evocative photograph captures the industrious spirit of the Menai Island community in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, as they engage in the laborious process of harvesting and drying mangrove bark. The island, part of the Cosmoledo Group, lies approximately 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) southwest of Mahe Island in the Indian Ocean. The entire island seems to have been transformed into a bustling hub of activity, with mangrove bark being the primary focus. In this image, we see the intricate process unfolding on the sandy beach. Men, dressed in loincloths, are seen loading the harvested bark onto boats, while others row them towards a waiting steamship. The steamship, anchored offshore, is a testament to the export market that drove this industry. The mangrove bark, an essential resource for various industries, was primarily used for the production of charcoal, which was then exported to countries like India and Mauritius. The bark was also used for tanning leather, and its ashes were used as a fertiliser. The scene is a stark reminder of the island's rich history and the resilience of its people. The mangrove forests, which once covered the island, have been replaced by the industrious activity of the harvesters. Despite the harsh conditions and the demanding nature of the work, the Menai Island community persevered, driven by the need to provide for their families and contribute to the economy of their island nation.
