EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases six exquisite British butterflies: the White Admiral, Limenitis camilla (specimens 1 and 2); the Gold-spotted Sylph, Metisella metis (specimens 3 and 4); and the Common Pathfinder, Catuna crithea (specimens 5 and 6). The White Admiral, also known as the Inspector or the Red Admiral, is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of around 7-8 cm. Its upper wings are black with white spots near the edges and a row of red spots along the leading edge. The underside of the wings is a bright orange colour, with black spots and a white band near the edges. The Gold-spotted Sylph, also known as the Small Copper or the Scarce Copper, is a small butterfly with a wingspan of around 4-5 cm. Its upper wings are brown with orange spots and a black border, while the underside is orange with black spots. The Common Pathfinder, also known as the Opisthograptis or the Small White, is a small butterfly with a wingspan of around 4-5 cm. Its upper wings are white with black borders and a row of small black spots along the leading edge. The underside of the wings is white with a few small black spots. These beautiful butterflies are captured in intricate detail in this handcoloured lithograph, showcasing their delicate wings and intricate patterns. The meticulous colouring adds depth and dimension to the image, making it a true work of art. Butterflies were a popular subject of study and collection during the 19th century, and this lithograph is a testament to the fascination and appreciation for these delicate creatures during that time. Today, these species continue to be studied and admired for their beauty and importance in ecosystems around the world.
