EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts Sandmyrtle, Kalmia buxifolia, also known as Ledum buxifolium. The illustration was created by George Cooke, based on an original observation by George Loddiges, and published as part of Conrad Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet in Hackney, London, in 1817. Sandmyrtle is a small evergreen shrub native to the eastern United States and Atlantic Canada. It is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves, which are oval in shape and have a distinctive waxy texture. The plant produces small, bell-shaped, white to pink flowers in dense clusters, which bloom in late spring or early summer. The Sandmyrtle was a popular ornamental plant in Victorian gardens due to its attractive appearance and fragrant flowers. It was also used medicinally for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The plant's common name, Sandmyrtle, refers to its preference for growing in sandy soils. This beautiful illustration showcases the intricate details of the Sandmyrtle's leaves, flowers, and stems. The delicate shading and colouring bring the plant to life, making it a true work of art. The engraving technique used in this print allowed for a high level of detail and precision, making it an excellent representation of the Sandmyrtle's natural beauty. The Botanical Cabinet, published by Conrad Loddiges, was a significant contribution to the field of botanical illustration. It contained over 600 plates, each meticulously handcoloured and produced using the latest techniques of the time. This Sandmyrtle illustration is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and engravers involved in creating this remarkable publication.
