EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the 18th century depicts the Reception of the Hostages from Tipu Sahib, Sultan of Mysore, by Lord Cornwallis in March 1792. The peaceful scene contrasts starkly with the tumultuous battles and conflicts that had previously marked Anglo-Mysore relations. Two young princes, Tipu Sahib's sons, aged about ten and eight, are temporarily taken as hostages as part of a peace treaty. The boys are respectfully received by Lord Cornwallis, who is dressed in full British military regalia, complete with a red coat, white waistcoat, and tricorn hat. Surrounding the scene are British soldiers and troops, all in uniform, standing at attention, adding to the formal atmosphere of the event. Tipu Sahib's sons are accompanied by Indian attendants, one of whom holds a parasol over the boys to shield them from the sun. The Sultan himself is not present, but his presence is felt through the ornate turbans and other Indian attire worn by his representatives. The Reception of the Hostages from Tipu Sahib is a poignant reminder of the complex negotiations and bargaining that characterized colonial interactions during the 18th century. The peaceful resolution of this particular conflict, however temporary, underscores the potential for diplomacy and respectful exchange between different cultures and powers. This image, captured by an unknown photographer, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Indian colonial history and the intricacies of diplomacy during the 1790s.
