This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Sciences) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two intriguing gecko species: the House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus, also known as the Ring-necked Gecko) and the Broad-tailed Gecko (Phyllurus platurus, also known as the Broad-tailed Ring-necked Gecko or the New Holland Gecko). The House Gecko, depicted on the left, is native to Africa and Asia, and is commonly found in houses and other human habitats. It is characterized by its distinctive ringed neck and its ability to change color and pattern for camouflage. The Broad-tailed Gecko, shown on the right, is native to Australia and New Guinea.
