EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating glimpse into the vibrant underwater world of the French Angelfish, Emperor Angelfish, Batfish, Longfin Baitfish, and their marine companions, as depicted in Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg, Germany, in 1804. The engraving showcases four intriguing marine creatures: the French Angelfish (Chaetodon vespertilio, Pomacanthus paru), Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator), Batfish (Platax orbicularis), and Longfin Baitfish (Platax teira). The French Angelfish, with its distinctive black and white stripes, can be seen gracefully swimming among the coral reefs, while the Emperor Angelfish, with its impressive size and regal appearance, dominates the scene. The Batfish, with its unique wing-like pectoral fins, glides effortlessly through the water, adding a touch of mystery to the composition. The Longfin Baitfish, with its long, flowing fins, provides a contrasting dynamic to the more static poses of the angelfish. Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a prolific contributor to the field of ichthyology, producing numerous works on natural history. His encyclopedia, which was intended to be a comprehensive record of all known fish species, was a testament to his dedication to documenting the natural world. This stunning engraving, with its intricate detail and rich colors, not only captures the beauty and diversity of these marine creatures but also offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when natural history was a source of wonder and fascination.
