EDITORS COMMENTS
This color plate depicts two exquisitely dressed wooden dolls representing the courtiers Josephine Princess Collorowsky and Lady Pauline, as they might have appeared in the toy box of young Princess Victoria during the Victorian era. The dolls, created from fine wood, are meticulously dressed in the latest fashionable attire of the time. Princess Collorowsky's doll is dressed as Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and gardens. She wears a vibrant green gown adorned with intricate embroidery and gold trim, while her hair is styled in a elaborate bun adorned with flowers and ribbons. Her outfit is completed with a matching shawl and a pair of high-heeled shoes. Lady Pauline's doll, on the other hand, is dressed as Duchesse de Conde or Duchess of Barrington. Her satin gown is a rich shade of purple, with a low-cut neckline and long sleeves. The gown is accessorized with a matching ribbon sash and a pair of elegant gloves. Her hair is styled in soft curls, and she wears a delicate pearl necklace and earrings. The dolls are depicted against a simple background, allowing the intricate details of their outfits to take center stage. This beautiful image is an illustration from Frances H. Low's "Queen Victoria's Dolls," published by George Newness in London in 1894. The illustration was created by the talented Alan Wright, who expertly captured the essence of the Victorian era through these charming wooden dolls.
