EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured pochoir (stencil) etching captures the enchanting atmosphere of a masquerade ball in the Belle Époque era. The image, titled "Un Incroyable et une Cantinière" or "An Incredible Woman and a Cantinière," showcases a stylish couple dressed in elaborate and fashionable costumes. The woman dons an embroidered blouse with a bird-adorned de ceinture (waist belt) and a striped skirt, while the man wears a formal suit with a top hat. The use of pochoir technique adds an art deco flair to the image, with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The scene is reminiscent of the opulent masquerade balls that were popular during this time, often attended by the Parisian elite and the Ballets Russes. The woman's elaborate hairstyle and the man's elegant posture exude an air of sophistication and chic. The woman's orientalist-inspired costume, with its Middle Eastern influences, reflects the cultural fascination of the time. This image is a reproduction of an illustration by Bernard Boutet de Monvel, published in Tommaso Antongini's Journal des Dames et des Modes in 1912. The Journal des Dames et des Modes was a leading fashion publication during the Belle Époque, known for its beautiful and intricately detailed illustrations. This print is a stunning example of the fashion and art of the time, and a reminder of the elegance and allure of the masquerade balls of the past.
