EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the distinguished figure of Canon John Neale Dalton (1839-1931), Steward of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Dalton's tenure at the chapel began in 1871, during which time he was also appointed as the tutor to the future King George V and his elder brother, Albert Victor. The brothers' education under Dalton's guidance was marked by a strong emphasis on moral values and discipline, as well as a deep appreciation for the arts and history. In 1882, Dalton accompanied the two Princes on their world cruise aboard the HMS Bacchante, providing them with invaluable experiences and knowledge that would shape their futures as leaders. Dalton's dedication to the education and upbringing of the future monarch and his brother was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Royal Family and the institution of the monarchy. His influence extended beyond the realm of education, as he was also a respected clergyman, serving as the Vicar of St. George's Chapel from 1888 until his retirement in 1911. This photograph, taken in 1931, captures Dalton in his later years, with the wisdom and experience of a lifetime etched on his face. The portrait serves as a reminder of the crucial role that dedicated educators and mentors play in shaping the lives of future leaders and shaping the course of history.
