EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the early stages of the First World War, on 21 November 1914, in the Egyptian desert. The image showcases a group of Bedouin tribesmen, their faces etched with determination and resilience, as they ride their camels across the arid landscape. The Bedouin people, renowned for their nomadic lifestyle and deep connection to the desert, played a significant role in the Middle Eastern theater of WWI. They were recruited by British officers, including T.E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, to fight against the Ottoman Turks. The Bedouin's extensive knowledge of the desert and their skill in navigating its harsh terrain proved invaluable to the Allied forces. In this photograph, we see these men, dressed in traditional robes and headdresses, their faces shielded from the sun by keffiyehs, as they ride their camels, their weapons slung across their bodies. The 1910s were a time of great upheaval in the Middle East, with the Ottoman Empire in decline and the First World War bringing about significant changes to the region. This photograph offers a glimpse into the lives of these Bedouin tribesmen, who, despite the challenges of war, continued to maintain their traditions and way of life. The John Barrett Collection, held by Mary Evans Picture Library, preserves this historical image, allowing us to connect with the past and appreciate the bravery and resilience of these men who fought in the deserts of Egypt during WWI.
