EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving from Friedrich Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, we find a captivating scene of various deer and antelope species. The image showcases the Siberian Musk Deer (Moschus moschiferus), represented by a mature male and two females. The male Siberian Musk Deer is easily identified by its distinctive large, curved horns and small, rounded ears. The females have no horns and are much smaller in size. Adjacent to the Musk Deer are the Napu Musk Deer (Tragulus javanicus) and Indian Musk Deer (Moschus indicus). The Napu Musk Deer is the smallest of all the deer species, with a body length of only 30-35 cm. It is characterized by its short, spiral horns and a white patch on its rump. The Indian Musk Deer, on the other hand, has a more elongated body and smaller, straight horns. In the lower left corner of the illustration, a Royal Antelope (Neotragus pygmaeus) is depicted. This tiny antelope species, native to Central and West Africa, has a body length of 25-30 cm and is known for its unique, elongated, and twisted horns. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the late 18th century. It not only serves as an educational tool for children but also as a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the natural world as it was understood during that time. The various deer and antelope species depicted in this illustration continue to inhabit diverse regions around the world, providing a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists on our planet.
