This evocative print captures the legendary moment when Welsh privateer and buccaneer, Admiral Sir Henry Morgan (1635-1688), led his English forces in the sack of the Spanish city of Panama in 1671. The historic scene unfolds before us, with Morgan at the forefront, his men engaged in fierce combat against the Spanish defenders. The city, once a symbol of Spanish power and wealth, lies in ruins, with smoke rising from the buildings and the sound of clashing swords and gunfire filling the air. Morgan, a notorious figure in the annals of pirate history, had long been a thorn in the side of the Spanish Empire, raiding their ships and settlements in the Caribbean.
