Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the Marsh Marigold, or Caltha palustris, also known as Marica paludosa, in all its splendor. The Marsh Marigold is a perennial herb native to wetlands and shallow waters in Europe, Asia, and North America. This botanical illustration, created by the skilled hand of Sydenham Edwards, was published in William Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1803. The Marsh Marigold is easily identified by its bright yellow flowers, which bloom in early spring, and its narrow, striped leaves. The plant's roots are submerged in water, while the stems and leaves grow above the surface. The small, white flowers in this illustration are most likely the variety Caltha palustris var. alba, which is less common in the wild but is often cultivated for its striking appearance. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential tool for the scientific community during the 18th and 19th centuries. They provided a precise and accurate record of plant species, facilitating the study and classification of new discoveries. Sydenham Edwards was a renowned botanical artist and illustrator, and his work was highly regarded for its meticulous attention to detail and beautiful coloration. This particular illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigor of the time, offering a glimpse into the natural world and the early history of botanical exploration. The Marsh Marigold continues to be a beloved plant in gardens and wetlands, and this illustration remains a captivating reminder of its unique beauty.
