EDITORS COMMENTS
Lucius Verus Augustus: A Fragmentary Portrait of a Co-Emperor from the Antonine Dynasty This fragmentary marble bust represents Lucius Verus Augustus (130-169 AD), a Roman Emperor who ruled alongside Marcus Aurelius from 161 to 169 AD. Lucius Verus was the son of Marcus Aurelius' older brother, and he was adopted by his uncle upon Marcus Aurelius' ascension to the throne. Lucius Verus is depicted here in the traditional Roman imperial style, with a serious expression and a neatly trimmed beard. His hair is styled in the short, curly locks typical of the Antonine period. The bust was discovered in a villa in Acqua Traversa, near Rome, and is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The fragmentary state of the statue suggests that it may have once been part of a larger sculpture, perhaps a full-length statue or a group depicting Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius together. Lucius Verus is known for his patronage of the arts and his military campaigns against the Parthians. He was also a co-ruler with Marcus Aurelius, and the two emperors shared power and responsibility during their reign. This portrait offers a glimpse into the visual representation of imperial power during the Antonine Dynasty, a period marked by stability, prosperity, and cultural achievements. The intricately carved details of Lucius Verus' face and features reveal the skill of the Roman sculptor, who captured the essence of the emperor's likeness despite the fragmentary state of the bust. The portrait invites us to reflect on the history and culture of ancient Rome, and the enduring legacy of its imperial rulers.
