EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print captures the momentous occasion of the wedding of Louis-Joseph Xavier Francois, the Dauphin of France, and Marie-Antoinette of Austria, which took place on May 15, 1770, at the Palace of Versailles. The young couple, both in their late teens, are depicted in regal attire, with Louis XVI wearing the traditional French crown and Marie Antoinette in an elegant white gown and veil. The background is adorned with intricate gold and floral motifs, symbolizing the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy. Louis XVI, born in 1754, was the last king of the Bourbon dynasty in France, while Marie Antoinette, born in 1755, was the youngest daughter of the Emperor of Austria. Their marriage was arranged as part of a political alliance between France and Austria, and it marked the beginning of a tumultuous reign. The couple's union was celebrated throughout Europe, and their wedding was attended by numerous dignitaries and nobles. However, their marriage was not a happy one, and their extravagant lifestyle, amidst the growing economic and political instability in France, contributed to the mounting discontent among the people. The print is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this marriage, which ultimately ended in the downfall of the French monarchy and the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. The image also serves as a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the French court during the Ancien Régime, a time of great cultural and artistic achievements.
