EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print, titled 'The Gun Line SOS - The Salvo,' showcases the intensity and complexity of the frontline during World War I. At the helm of this scene is Captain Gilbert Holiday (1879-1937) of the Royal Field Artillery. Holiday's early life was spent in St. John's Wood, where he would gaze out of his window and witness the Royal Horse Artillery, marking his first encounter with horses. He received his education at Westminster and furthered his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. Prior to his military service, Holiday worked as an illustrator for esteemed publications such as The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. In 1914, Holiday enlisted as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery and was deployed to the Western Front. His experiences during this time inspired him to create numerous paintings for army messes, capturing the raw emotion and energy of the battlefield. 'The Gun Line SOS - The Salvo' is a testament to Holiday's unique perspective and artistic talent. The image portrays a gun line in action, with team members working together to load and fire a gun in response to an SOS signal. The salvo, or volley of shells, is launched into the distance, symbolizing the unwavering determination and resilience of the soldiers in the face of adversity. This powerful and poignant print serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the indomitable spirit of those who fought in it.
