Carroll Island, located off the coast of Washington State in the United States, was once home to a large and thriving colony of Common Murres, also known as Common Guillemots. This historic photograph, estimated to have been taken around 1907, captures the beauty and abundance of this remarkable bird community. Common Murres are unique in their ability to live both at sea and on land. They spend most of their lives at sea, diving for food, but return to land to breed and raise their young. Carroll Island provided an ideal nesting site for these birds, with its rocky shores and abundant food sources. The photograph shows the Common Murres in various stages of nesting, with some birds tending to their young chicks while others are out at sea hunting for food.
