Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead
A view over Newcastle (on the far side of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (in the foreground) during the great fire which killed more than 50 people and destroyed many buildings. The fire started on 6 October in a worsted factory on the Gateshead side. Sulphur and other combustible materials in a nearby warehouse were ignited by the heat. The resulting huge explosion projected burning debris across Newcastle and thus the fire spread rapidly. Date: October 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Haunting Scene of Destruction: The Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead, October 1854 This evocative image captures the aftermath of one of the most devastating fires in the history of Newcastle and Gateshead. The blaze, which broke out on October 6, 1854, began in a worsted factory on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne. Unbeknownst to the factory workers and residents of both towns, a nearby warehouse held an abundance of sulphur and other highly combustible materials. The heat from the factory fire ignited these dangerous substances, leading to a massive explosion. The resulting inferno sent burning debris flying across the river, rapidly spreading the conflagration to Newcastle. The once-thriving towns were soon engulfed in flames, leaving more than 50 people dead and countless buildings destroyed. The scene depicted in this photograph is a chilling reminder of the destructive power of fire. The smoky, hazy sky hangs heavy over the ruins of Newcastle, while the charred remains of Gateshead's buildings stand starkly against the water of the River Tyne. The devastation is palpable, with the remnants of once-proud structures now reduced to little more than smoldering rubble. The Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead was a tragic event that forever changed the landscape of these historic towns. This haunting image serves as a poignant reminder of the past, offering a glimpse into a time when the destructive forces of nature and industry converged with devastating consequences.
