This evocative print depicts a solemn and penitent Lord Francis Bacon (1561-1626) as he confesses his misdeeds to the Parliament of England. Known as one of the greatest intellects of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, Bacon served many roles in the government, including Attorney General and Lord Chancellor. However, his tenure was not without controversy. In the late 16th century, Bacon was accused of taking bribes as a judge, leading to his impeachment and a fine. Later, in 1621, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London for a time due to allegations of bribery and corruption during his tenure as Lord Chancellor. This print captures the moment of Bacon's confession to Parliament, an event that marked a low point in his distinguished career.
