The scene is one of quiet determination, as the fishermen continue their traditional practice of fence-fishing, a method that has been used by the Selkup people for generations. Fence-fishing involves constructing a fence of wooden stakes or branches in the river, which is then covered with ice. Holes are drilled in the ice, and bait is placed inside to attract the burbot, a freshwater fish that is a staple in the Selkup diet. Once the fish have been caught, they are removed through the holes in the ice, providing a sustainable source of food for the community during the long, cold winter months. The Selkup people, also known as the Ostyaks, are an indigenous minority group that has lived in the region for over 5,000 years.
