EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, taken during the Polar Night in North Siberia, Russia, Selkup indigenous fishermen are seen working diligently to pull burbots from their icy traps along the frozen river Hudosey. The men, bundled up against the harsh winter conditions, use long hooks to extract the fish from the traps, which are covered in a thick layer of ice. The scene is one of quiet determination, as the fishermen continue their traditional practice of fence-fishing, a method that has been used by the Selkup people for generations. Fence-fishing involves constructing a fence of wooden stakes or branches in the river, which is then covered with ice. Holes are drilled in the ice, and bait is placed inside to attract the burbot, a freshwater fish that is a staple in the Selkup diet. Once the fish have been caught, they are removed through the holes in the ice, providing a sustainable source of food for the community during the long, cold winter months. The Selkup people, also known as the Ostyaks, are an indigenous minority group that has lived in the region for over 5,000 years. They are well-adapted to the extreme weather conditions of North Siberia, and their traditional way of life is deeply rooted in the natural world. Fence-fishing is just one of many practices that have enabled the Selkup people to survive and thrive in this challenging environment. Despite the harsh conditions, the scene exudes a sense of peace and tranquility, as the fishermen work in harmony with the natural world to provide for their community. The snow falling gently in the background adds to the serene atmosphere, creating a beautiful and timeless image of life in North Siberia during the Polar Night.
