EDITORS COMMENTS
Fanny Mendelssohn, born Fanny Hensel on February 14, 1805, was a remarkable musical prodigy and a gifted composer of the Romantic era. She is best known as the older sister of the renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn, who received widespread recognition during their lifetimes, while Fanny's talents were largely overshadowed. In this portrait, Fanny is depicted in the prime of her life, around the age of 42. Her expressive eyes and the delicate ringlets framing her face reveal her youthful beauty and intelligence. The large head dress adorned with intricate floral patterns adds an elegant touch to her appearance. Fanny began her musical education at a young age, receiving lessons from her father, Abraham Mendelssohn, and later from her brother Felix. She composed her first piano piece at the age of six and continued to compose throughout her life, creating over 460 works, including sonatas, chamber music, and songs. Despite her exceptional talent, Fanny's works were not published during her lifetime due to societal norms that discouraged women from pursuing careers in music. Her music was only discovered and published posthumously, in the late 19th century. Fanny Mendelssohn passed away on May 14, 1847, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the talents and achievements of women in history, who have often been overlooked or overshadowed by their male counterparts.
