EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph showcases three extinct gastropods, or ancient shelled mollusks: Ammonites Parkinsoni, A. macrocephalus, and Serpula grandis. The image is taken from Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann. Dr. Schmidt's Book of Petrification was a groundbreaking work that introduced both the specialist and general reader to the fascinating world of fossils and palaeontology. Ammonites, characterized by their distinctive spiral shells, are among the most well-known and beloved fossils. The Ammonite Parkinsoni, depicted here, is named after the English clergyman and amateur geologist, William Parkinson. A. macrocephalus, meaning "large headed," is also shown, with its large, rounded shell. The Serpula grandis, or "large Serpula," is identified by its large, coiled shell, reminiscent of a serpent. The intricate details of these fossils are beautifully rendered in this handcolored lithograph, providing a glimpse into the rich history of the earth and the diverse life forms that once inhabited it. The lithograph serves as a testament to the importance of scientific discovery and the enduring allure of the natural world.
