EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, the Duchess of Argyll, formerly known as Margaret Whigham, is captured in the elegant and resplendent outfit she wore for the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953. The Duchess, who was then married to Charles Sweeny, donned a sheath-like silver lame dress, a magnificent creation by renowned fashion designer Victor Stiebel. The dress was embellished with an intricate design of silver crystals and diamante embroidery, shimmering brilliantly under the church lights. Over the silver lame dress, the Duchess wore the traditional robe of a peeress, a garment of pure silk velvet, banded with ermine. The robe added an air of grandeur and tradition to her Coronation attire, reflecting the aristocratic heritage of the Duchess. The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 was a significant event in British history, and the Duchess of Argyll, as a prominent member of the aristocracy, was a fitting representation of the elegance and sophistication of the era. The Duchess of Argyll's Coronation gown is a testament to the fashion trends of the time, with the silver lame fabric and crystal embroidery being popular choices for formal wear. The dress, along with the traditional robe, showcases the opulence and grandeur of the Coronation ceremony, making this photograph a valuable record of a momentous occasion in British history.
