This stunning handcolored engraving on steel, titled "Dhole," depicts the elusive and beautiful Asiatic wild dog, Cuon alpinus, also known as the Indian wild dog or dhole. The image was created by renowned Scottish artist and naturalist, Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith, based on his meticulous drawings. The engraving was then expertly hand-colored and published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1839 as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Mammalia, a comprehensive collection of illustrations of various mammal species. The dhole is a social and cooperative canid native to South and Southeast Asia. They are known for their distinctive black mask and white chest, with a reddish-brown coat covering the rest of their body.
