The Dandy Doctor

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Edward Marris, a captivating theatrical production first presented at the Avenue Theatre in Sunderland on March 26, 1900, featured music by Dudley Powell. In this intriguing photograph, the dapper doctor, dressed to the nines in a top hat, tails, monacle, spats, and cane, is seen raising his hand in a blessing-like gesture, while holding the hands of two women. The scene is filled with a sense of conventional confusion, as the doctor appears to be mistakenly holding the hand of the maid instead of the heroine. The doctor's expression is one of shock and disbelief, adding to the comedic element of the moment. Despite the initial mix-up, the doctor ultimately ends up with the heroine, making for a delightful resolution in this classic tale of love and misunderstanding. The production went on to tour various theaters, including the Princes Theatre in Llandudno, where it played for three nights and a matinee on August 2, 1900 (if wet). This photograph captures a moment of hilarity and intrigue from the beloved play, a testament to the enduring appeal of the dandy doctor character and the human capacity for error and resolution.
