Coronation of King Henry VI 1429

On November 6th, 1429, a month before his eighth birthday and less than four months after the coronation of his rival, the Dauphin, in Reims, the young Henry VI was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey by his great-uncle, Cardinal Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, the traditional rite being modified to incorporate French practices to show that this was but the first part of a fuller coronation procedure which could only be completed in France. Date: 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment when young King Henry VI of England was crowned at Westminster Abbey on November 6, 1429. At just seven years and eleven months old, Henry was crowned in a modified coronation ceremony, incorporating French practices to assert his claim to the English throne, which had been contested by the Dauphin of France, who had been crowned in Reims earlier that year. The ceremony was presided over by the King's great-uncle, Cardinal Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, who wore the distinctive red cap of his office. The young monarch is depicted wearing the traditional robes and crown of the English monarchy, symbolizing the continuity of the monarchy despite the challenges of the time. The coronation of Henry VI marked the beginning of a long and complex reign, during which he faced numerous political and military challenges. This photograph, taken in 1936, captures the solemnity and grandeur of the coronation ceremony, transporting us back to the fifteenth century and the rich history of the British monarchy.
