EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment of the conversion of native Timor Islanders by Portuguese Dominican Friars in 1511. The Portuguese, under the leadership of explorer Afonso de Albuquerque, had established a colony on the island in the Pacific Ocean just a few years prior. In this photograph from the Portuguese Colonial History Series, we see a Dominican friar standing before a group of Timorese people, his outstretched hand gesturing towards a cross as he delivers the message of Christianity. The native islanders, some with their hands raised in submission, listen intently as their new Portuguese overlords introduce them to a belief system that would forever change their way of life. The arrival of the Portuguese and the spread of Christianity marked the beginning of a long and complex relationship between the island of Timor and the European world. The Dominican Friars played a crucial role in the conversion process, establishing missions and schools to teach the local population about their new faith. However, the introduction of Christianity also brought with it conflict and cultural clashes, as the Portuguese sought to assert their dominance over the island and its people. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the history of Portuguese colonialism and the spread of Christianity in the Pacific. The Dominican Friars, with their commitment to spreading the word of God, played a significant role in the conversion of the native Timorese people, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the island's history.
