EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the First Battle of Bull Run, a pivotal moment in the American Civil War. The clash between the Union army, led by General Irvin McDowell, and the Confederate forces under the command of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson took place on July 21, 1861, near Manassas, Virginia. The Union army, with a strength of around 35,000 soldiers, was confident of a quick victory, having trained extensively and outnumbering the Confederates. However, the Confederates, with only 22,000 men, were led by the brilliant tactician Jackson, who skillfully deployed his troops and used the terrain to his advantage. The Union army was caught off guard and suffered a humiliating defeat, with over 1,200 men killed, wounded, or missing. This engagement marked the end of any illusion that the war would be a short and decisive conflict. The print, with its dramatic composition and intricate details, transports us back to that fateful day in July 1861, offering a glimpse into the history of one of the most significant events in American history. This image is a rights-managed print from Mary Evans Prints Online, and is not to be used for commercial purposes.
