EDITORS COMMENTS
Chateau de Ferfay: A Scene at the Gate, March 18, 1918 This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the First World War as soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) approach the gates of Chateau de Ferfay in France. Among them is Gunner Vivian John Cummings (313870), born on July 31, 1875, of the 3rd Canadian Division. Chateau de Ferfay, a grand French estate, was commandeered by the British military during the First World War and served as a headquarters for the 1st Great War Regiments Topographical Section. The soldiers in this photograph are likely on their way to carry out reconnaissance or mapping missions in the surrounding area. The image, taken in March 18, 1918, offers a glimpse into the daily life of soldiers during the war. The scene at the gate to the chateau is a reminder of the historical significance of this site and the role it played in military history. Gunner Cummings, like many soldiers of the CEF, left his home in Canada to serve his country and contribute to the Allied war effort. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during World War I and the important role that historical sites like Chateau de Ferfay played in the conflict.
