EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain E.N. Frankland Bell, VC: A Hero of the Battle of the Somme This evocative photograph captures the stoic and resolute gaze of Captain E.N. Frankland Bell, Victoria Cross recipient of the 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Taken during the fateful day of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 at Thiepval, France, this image immortalizes a moment in time that forever changed the course of World War I history. Born on 15th April 1886 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Frankland Bell enlisted in the British Army in 1903, joining the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. His exceptional leadership and courage were quickly recognized, and he rose through the ranks to become a Captain by the outbreak of World War I. On 1st July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the 9th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers faced heavy enemy fire near Thiepval. Amidst the chaos and carnage, Frankland Bell led his men with unwavering determination, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to encourage his soldiers and direct their efforts. As the battle raged on, Frankland Bell single-handedly captured a German machine gun post, eliminating its crew and securing a vital position for his battalion. His extraordinary acts of bravery earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. This powerful photograph, taken by renowned war photographer Stanley Llewellyn Wood, stands as a testament to Frankland Bell's unyielding courage and leadership during one of the most significant battles in World War I history. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers like Frankland Bell, who put their lives on the line to defend their country and protect the freedoms we cherish today.
