EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of connection between C. Harris, a sailor and explorer, and a Galapagos tortoise in 1898. Harris was on a mission to collect giant tortoises for Lord Walter Rothschild, a renowned naturalist and collector, who was eager to expand his exotic animal collection at Tring Park in Hertfordshire, England. The journey was not an easy one. Harris and his team faced numerous challenges, including disease outbreaks, harsh weather conditions, and difficulties in keeping the tortoises alive during transportation. The tortoises were eventually transported from the Galapagos Islands to the United States and then to England via the USA. The image shows Harris tenderly feeding a Galapagos tortoise, likely a subspecies of Chelonoidis nigra or Geochelone elephantopus porteri. The Galapagos giant tortoise, a member of the Testudinidae family, is a critically endangered species native to the Galapagos Islands. The tortoise's prehistoric appearance and slow, deliberate movements have fascinated explorers and naturalists for centuries. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the Galapagos Islands and the role that collectors and explorers played in the study and preservation of exotic species during the Victorian era. The image also highlights the importance of caring for and preserving endangered species, a practice that remains relevant today.
