EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment during the Second World War when British Sherman tanks of the 30 Corps crossed Nijmegen Bridge on September 17, 1944, as part of Operation Market Garden. A bold and ambitious plan devised by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, Operation Market Garden aimed to drop thousands of British and American airborne troops into Holland to secure an invasion route into Germany. The British First Airborne Division, along with the American 81st and 101st Airborne Divisions, took part in this historic operation. However, despite the bravery and determination of the troops, the plan ultimately proved unsuccessful. The 17th of September marked the beginning of the attempt to capture the vital bridge, which was essential for the success of the operation. The crossing of the bridge by the British forces signified a crucial step forward in the battle, yet the failure of the operation to achieve its objectives became a turning point in the war. This image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers involved in this pivotal moment in World War II history.
