EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour painting depicts the Barringtonia calyptrata, also known as the mango pine or Cassowary Tree, as rendered by the skilled hand of Fred Polydore Nodder in the late 18th century. The original outline drawing for this masterpiece was made by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's historic first voyage across the Pacific Ocean, between 1768 and 1771. The Barringtonia calyptrata is a unique and intriguing plant, belonging to the family Anacardiaceae, order Ericales, and class Eudicot. It is an angiosperm, or flowering plant, and a dicot, meaning it has two seed leaves. The Barringtonia calyptrata is native to the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans, and is characterized by its coniferous appearance, with long, needle-like leaves and cones. However, it is actually a coniferous tree in appearance only, as it is not a true conifer, but rather an angiospermae, or seed-producing plant. The tree is named for the Cassowary, a large, flightless bird native to the same regions, which is depicted in the painting foraging at the base of the tree. The Cassowary, a member of the Casuariiformes order and the Casuariidae family, is a unique and fascinating bird, with distinctive physical features, including a casque on its head and powerful legs. This beautiful watercolour painting provides a glimpse into the natural world as it was observed and documented during one of the most significant voyages of exploration in history. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Barringtonia calyptrata and the Cassowary to life, offering a window into the natural history of the Pacific and Indian Oceans during the 18th century.
