The date is 8 July 1862, and the couple is en route to their new home in Darmstadt, Germany. Prince Louis, the third son of Grand Duke Ludwig III of Hesse and Princess Alice, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, had married on 1 July 1862 in a grand ceremony at St. James's Palace in London.
