1. This photograph captures the essence of the historic 1908 Olympic Games in London, where figure skating made its debut as a winter sport amidst the summer events. The image, taken at the Princes Skating Club in Knightsbridge, showcases a montage of the brave competitors who graced the ice rink that October. 2. From left to right, we see the determined faces of eleven athletes hailing from Russia, Sweden, Germany, and the United States. In the foreground, Nikolai Panin (later Panin-Kolomenkin) of Russia, with his confident posture and intense focus, sets the tone for the rest of the group. 3. Next to him stands Madge Syers of Great Britain, the first woman to perform a double jump in competition. Her elegant pose and graceful expression embody the beauty and artistry of figure skating. 4. Dorothy Greenhough-Smith, also from Great Britain, is depicted in a poised and focused stance, her eyes fixed on the horizon as she prepares for her routine. 5. Ulrich Salchow of Sweden, a pioneer in figure skating, is shown in the middle of the group, his arms outstretched in a dynamic pose that highlights his skill and agility on the ice. 6. The Johnsons, James and Phyllis, are the only brother-sister pair in the montage. Their united presence underscores the strong bond between competitors and their shared love for the sport. 7. The remaining competitors, including Per Thoren, Johansson, Cumming, Lycett, Johansson, Hubler, Burger, and Rendschmidt, each bring their unique energy and spirit to the scene, making this photograph a testament to the diversity and international appeal of figure skating. 8. The 1908 Olympic Games marked a significant milestone in the history of figure skating, as it was the first time the sport was included in the Summer Olympics.
