EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a study sheet filled with vibrant figures engaged in dancing and music-making, all adorned in medieval clothing. On the left side of the image, a lively jester captivates our attention as he dances skillfully while holding a marot. Meanwhile, on the right side, an extraordinary man impresses us by playing both a flute and drum simultaneously. In the center of this enchanting scene stands an elegant lady wearing a pointed hat and delicately holding an apple in her right hand. Just below her, another woman gracefully plays a harp while also donning a pointed hat. Surrounding these mesmerizing characters are various pieces of medieval furniture such as cradles and decorated candle stands that add to the authenticity of this historical depiction. The presence of court jesters and fools further emphasizes the medieval ambiance captured within this artwork. Musical instruments like flutes, tibias, drums, and harps contribute to the rich soundscape depicted here. Created by Hendrik Abraham Klinkhamer between 1820-1872 in Amsterdam using paper etching techniques, this study sheet transports us back in time to experience both visual splendor and auditory delight.
