EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Portrait of Peter Hogerbeets, print maker: Jan Saenredam, Karel van Mander I, D. Heynsius" takes us back to the year 1599 and introduces us to a group of historical figures immersed in the world of medicine and literature. The oval frame encloses an intricately detailed scene where Aesculapius instructs Chiron while Apollo stands nearby as a patron of medicine. In the foreground, we see a bust depicting physician and poet Peter Hogerbeets, his visage captured with remarkable precision. Latin text surrounds him, containing valuable information about his life and achievements. Atop a console table lies an assortment of medical instruments symbolizing his dedication to healing. A harp at Hogerbeets' feet represents his poetic talent while a crow perched on a watch signifies the fleeting nature of time. Above him floats Coronis with her caduceus, further emphasizing the connection between medicine and poetry. The presence of Pegasus and Hippocrene alludes to inspiration derived from mythology while raised putti bestow upon Hogerbeets laurel wreaths and palm branches as symbols of triumph. A snake biting its tail reminds us that eternity is within our grasp. Notably, one putto blows bubbles representing vanitas symbols that remind us of life's transience. This artwork pays homage not only to Hogerbeets but also celebrates writers who have contributed significantly to human knowledge. Quint Lox
