EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of Woolwich Public Baths, now known as The Old Baths, located in Greenwich, Greater London. Originally designed by Henry Hudson Church and opened in 1894, this architectural marvel served as a hub for various recreational activities including swimming pools, slipper baths, a wash house, and laundry facilities. Its historical significance is further enhanced by its transformation into the student union for Thames Polytechnic (later University of Greenwich) after its closure in 1982. The entrance of The Old Baths is particularly striking with its distinctive Dutch gable above. This feature adds an elegant touch to the building's facade and reflects the influence of Flemish architecture. Although it is believed that the entrance underwent restyling during the 1930s, it still exudes timeless charm. Today, this iconic structure has been converted into a vibrant performing arts centre for the University of Greenwich called Bathway Theatre. It stands as a testament to both Victorian craftsmanship and modern adaptability. The blue and white color scheme beautifully complements the intricate details on its elevation. This remarkable photograph captures not only an architectural masterpiece but also tells a story of evolution and preservation. It serves as a reminder of how historic buildings can be repurposed to meet contemporary needs while retaining their original charm.
