EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the site canteen during the construction of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport. Taken in the 1970s, it showcases a group of Laing workmen engaged in lively conversation around a table. The camaraderie is palpable as these friends and mates take a well-deserved tea break from their laborious tasks. In October 1969, Laing's Industrial Engineering Branch proudly announced that they had secured the contract for this significant project. This marked their second major undertaking at Heathrow Airport, having previously completed construction on the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. The image not only offers us a glimpse into daily life on-site but also highlights the importance of communal spaces like canteens where workers could unwind and socialize amidst their demanding schedules. It serves as a testament to both hard work and human connection. As we observe these men engrossed in conversation, one can almost imagine them discussing various aspects of their work or sharing stories from outside the job site. Their dedication to constructing this vital infrastructure is evident, even during moments of respite. Thanks to A© Historic England Archive for preserving this remarkable snapshot that encapsulates an era when teamwork was crucial to shaping our modern world.
