Rustam meets the challenge of Ashkabus, from a Shah-nama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi

Rustam meets the challenge of Ashkabus, from a Shah-nama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi (Persian, about 934-1020), c. 1590-1600. Iran was losing a battle against Turan and the armies of its assembled allies from India and China. The hero Rustam arrived to pull the Iranian army back from the brink of destruction, slaying the enemy warrior Ashkabus on foot while allowing his horse Rakhsh to rest after a long, hard journey. The vast number of armies involved in the battle is indicated by the many banners that extend beyond the illustrations top border. This painting was probably produced at Shiraz, one of Irans major cultural centers, far to the south of the Safavid capital of Tabriz. Artists and works of art moved back and forth steadily between Shiraz and the Deccan in southwestern India during the 1500s and 1600s. The section of the Shah-nama on the recto is famous for the clever conversational repartee between Rustam and his opponent Ashkabus. When Ashkabus remarked that in choosing not to ride a horse Rustam had signed his own death warrant, Rustam retorted, " Would it be the case then that in your country... lions, tigers, and crocodiles [all] ride on horses to battle?" Rustam then brought down the horse of Ashkabus with a single arrow; his next arrow pierced Ashkabus in the chest

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Rustam meets the challenge of Ashkabus" showcases a pivotal moment from the Shah-nama (Book of Kings) by Firdausi. Painted in Iran around 1590-1600, this artwork depicts an intense battle scene where Iran is on the verge of defeat against Turan and its allies from India and China. Amidst this chaos, Rustam emerges as the hero who turns the tide of war. With his horse Rakhsh resting after a grueling journey, Rustam fearlessly confronts Ashkabus, an enemy warrior. The artist skillfully captures this climactic encounter as Rustam slays Ashkabus on foot with unwavering determination. The painting's intricate details extend beyond its borders, symbolizing the vast number of armies involved in this epic clash. Produced in Shiraz, a renowned cultural center in Iran during that time period, it reflects artistic exchanges between Shiraz and southwestern India's Deccan region. Notably, this section of the Shah-nama is famous for its clever conversational repartee between Rustam and Ashkabus. When taunted about not riding a horse into battle by his opponent, Rustam counters with wit and precision. His retort questions whether lions, tigers, or crocodiles ride horses to fight battles in Ashkabus' land before swiftly bringing down his adversary's steed with one arrow followed by piercing him through the chest with another. This remarkable print captures both the visual splendor and narrative depth found within Persian literature while showcasing Heritage Art/Heritage Images' commitment to preserving cultural heritage through their prints.
