EDITORS COMMENTS
This collection of vintage posters, created by Edward Penfield between the 1890s and 1907, showcases a unique blend of art and advertising from a bygone era. Published by Harper Publications in New York, these lithographs and lithotints were a staple of American culture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The posters, which feature anthropomorphic animals and intricate lettering, were used to promote various products and services, including James A. Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, a popular cough medicine. The posters depict a brown bear in a cozy bedroom setting, with the tagline "Ayer's Cherry Pectoral: The Oldest and Best-Known Remedy for Coughs and Colds." Penfield's illustrations are not only visually appealing but also reflect the scientific advancements and cultural values of the time. The posters often depict a nurse or a patient in a bedchamber, emphasizing the importance of rest and treatment in the context of illness. The use of capital letters and branded imagery in the posters also reflects the growing importance of brand recognition and marketing in American business. These posters, now preserved in the New York Public Library, offer a glimpse into the heritage art of advertising in the United States during the 1900s. They are a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the era, and serve as a reminder of the role that art and design have played in shaping American consumer culture.
