Oniwaka and Carp - Taira no Koremochi and the Demon

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating color woodblock print created by the renowned Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in the 1860s. This masterpiece is part of the series "Valor in China and Japan," and it showcases the legendary tale of Taira no Koremochi, a brave warrior, and the Demon of Mount Togakushi. The print depicts Koremochi, dressed in full battle armor, riding on horseback while holding a sword in one hand and a carp in the other. The carp, with its vibrant colors and detailed scales, seems to leap out of the water in a mesmerizing display. The background portrays a cataract, a powerful geographical feature, adding to the dynamic and dramatic scene. The story behind this print is rooted in Japanese folklore. According to legend, Koremochi, aided by the monk Musashibo Benkei, conquered the Demon of Mount Togakushi, who had been terrorizing the local population. The demon, disguised as a beautiful woman, attempted to seduce Koremochi, but he remained steadfast in his mission. In the end, Koremochi defeated the demon by presenting her with a carp, which she was unable to resist. This print is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The intricate details and vivid colors showcase the skill and artistry of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, making it a valuable addition to any collection of Asian art. The print is now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world. The combination of history, legend, and natural phenomena in this print makes it a unique and intriguing work of art, showcasing the beauty and complexity of Japanese culture and mythology.
