The Magi Follow the Star, from a Mirror of Holiness (Mir at al-quds) of Father
The Magi Follow the Star, from a Mirror of Holiness (Mir at al-quds) of Father Jerome Xavier, 1602-1604. One of the three kings points excitedly at the star at the upper left edge of the page, while another bites the finger of astonishment; the third holds his fist over his heart. They are all dressed like Portuguese merchants, but they ride camels associated with their homeland in Arabia, as specified in the text. At the breakaway court of Prince Salim in Allahabad, high-quality materials were not as plentiful as in the imperial capital. The paper is brittle and has browned excessively, and the paint films are relatively thin; here the text from the verso shows through the lightly coloured background

The Magi Follow the Star
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a scene from "Mirror of Holiness (Mir at al-quds)" by Father Jerome Xavier, created between 1602-1604. In this exquisite artwork, we witness the three kings eagerly following the guiding star in search of the newborn Jesus. The attention to detail is remarkable as one king points excitedly towards the upper left edge where the star shines brightly, while another displays his astonishment by biting his finger. The third king holds his fist over his heart, reflecting their deep reverence and devotion. Dressed like Portuguese merchants but riding camels associated with their Arabian homeland, these figures beautifully symbolize cultural diversity and unity. Created during Prince Salim's court in Allahabad, this painting showcases high artistic skill despite limited resources available at that time. The delicate paper has aged gracefully with excessive browning, adding an authentic touch to its historical significance. The use of opaque watercolor and ink brings life to each stroke on this gold-adorned manuscript from Northern India's Mughal period. This masterpiece represents not only Indian heritage but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and faith transcending borders. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exceptional piece offers viewers a glimpse into history through its intricate details and masterful execution. It reminds us of our shared humanity and universal quest for spiritual enlightenment across different cultures and eras.
