EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brave and legendary Jean Navarre, a French pilot during the First World War. In 1916, Navarre became France's first air ace, earning him the nickname "the Sentinel of Verdun" for his heroic actions during the battle fought there. With an impressive record of downing 12 enemy aircraft, he proved himself as a formidable fighter pilot. However, tragedy struck on June 17th when Navarre was shot down and suffered severe head injuries that led to his confinement in an asylum for two years. Although he never returned to aerial combat, his legacy remained intact. In 1919, he was chosen to make a celebratory flight through the iconic Arc de Triomphe but met with a fatal accident during practice. This monochrome portrait showcases Navarre's determination and courage as he poses in his military uniform against the backdrop of an airplane. The image transports us back to a time when aviation was still in its infancy but played a crucial role in warfare. Jean Navarre's story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals like him during times of conflict. His contribution to aviation history and his ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered as part of France's rich military heritage.
